“It’s surreal:” Community reacts to search on White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooter’s home

Hours after Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was arrested for allegedly firing a shot inside the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, FBI and police searched his family home in Torrance, California, Saturday, April 25.

The Union spoke to local residents the morning after the search Sunday, April 26.

Art class confidential: Inside a six-hour studio drawing session

Watch how students of Drawing Fundamentals II, an intermediate skills art class offered on Fridays, spend a typical six-hour and 20-minute session together. Led by full time fine arts instructor Joe Hardesty, they transform blank pieces of paper into stunning works of art as they train to work over long periods of time.

“It creates the circumstances or the kind of setting for a longer, more sustained kind of concentration, which I think is really good training for artists,” Hardesty said, adding that it can also help those who are looking to become designers, illustrators or animators.

Watch ECC cosmetology students get ready for their final show of the semester. Students styled their hair, makeup and outfits to align with a certain decade, including the '60s. These cosmetology students showcased their looks in the Campus Theatre on Dec. 5.

Jewelry design students share advice on creative process

First introduced for the 1948-1949 semester, the jewelry fabrication and design program is one of the oldest courses offered at El Camino College. Students get the opportunity to learn how to design and create works of jewelry through a variety of skills including welding, sandblasting, enameling and metalsmithing.

In order to receive a certificate of achievement, students must take a beginner and an intermediate skills course.

This includes a six-hour lab workshop, which meets weekly on Friday afternoons. All skill levels are welcome in this inclusive hub of creativity.

Scene One Film Club: El Camino’s cinephiles connect over film

Scene One Film Club is a long-running student organization that connects film fans across all majors. During weekly meetings in the Haag Recital Hall and outside the Music Building, members discuss movies, debate topics such as “Are film adaptations good?” and plan meet-up groups to watch the latest Hollywood releases.
